Neuroendocrine tumour congress and congress for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's specialists to be held this month

Today and tomorrow, the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) is hosting the annual congress of the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS), kicking off an intense schedule of medical events and conferences that will continue next week with the international congress for specialists in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In this way, the CCIB, located in the Forum area and managed by Fira de Barcelona, is gradually returning to normal activity, with over 70 events planned this year, of which approximately twenty are major medical congresses.

Doctors and scientific researchers from all over the world have returned to the CCIB today for the first of this year’s scheduled medical congresses. Between today and tomorrow, the 19th ENETS Congress, which has been held at this centre for a decade, will bring together a thousand attendees who will present and discuss the latest scientific and research developments in the field of neuroendocrine tumours. The scientific programme includes a dozen different sessions, 200 scientific publications and the presentation of approximately twenty studies.

Founded in 2004, ENETS is the most prominent scientific organisation in this type of tumour and has over 1,500 members from different medical fields, such as oncology, endocrinology, nuclear medicine, radiology and surgery, among others. In 2020, Vall d’Hebron Hospital became the first institution in Spain to achieve the prestigious ENETS certification as a centre of excellence in the treatment of neuroendocrine tumours.

Meanwhile, AD/PD 2022, the international conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and related neurological disorders, will be held from 15 to 20 March. With 150 scientific sessions and a dozen speakers, it will draw over 3,500 medical and scientific professionals from around the world with a series of talks that bring together the different neurodegenerative diseases in a single setting and examine their similarities and differences. The annual conference will focus on the latest advances, disease mechanisms, diagnosis, prevention and development of innovative therapies.

Many international events

“We’ve started the year with optimism and caution, with the aim of continuing to contribute to the economic recovery of the city and the surrounding area,” says Marc Rodríguez, General Manager of the CCIB. In the first two months of the year, the CCIB has already hosted 8 events, and the arrival of the first major medical congresses continues the positive trend in the direction of a return to normality, as evidenced by the more than 70 events scheduled for 2022.

In this regard, Rodríguez emphasises the importance of medical congresses because “they promote the exchange of ideas and scientific knowledge for the benefit of society as a whole”. He also stresses that “we [in the city and in the country as a whole] have first-class professionals and health centres that are a great source of knowledge and innovation” closely linked to these events.

Specifically, throughout 2022 the CCIB will host approximately twenty major medical events, including the International Neuromodulation Society (INS) World Congress, the World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer (WCGI), the congress of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE), the congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), the congress of the European Academy of Paediatric Societies (EAPS), the congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) and the European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC).

The Barcelona International Convention Centre, located in the Besòs area in the technology and business district known as 22@, is made up of the Convention Centre and the Auditorium Forum, with a combined area of 100,000 square metres. Its management by Fira de Barcelona allows for the comprehensive operation of the city’s three major fairgrounds and congress venues, together with Gran Via and Montjuïc, which will strengthen the international positioning of the institution and the city.
