For its sustainable management and promotion of responsible tourism

The Barcelona International Convention Center (CCIB), managed by Fira de Barcelona, has renewed its Biosphere certification for its environmentally friendly management, culture, and the social and economic return of the city. Initially obtained by the CCIB  in 2019, this certification is part of the Barcelona Biosphere Destination Tourism Sustainability Commitment, backed by the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism of Barcelona.

The Palau de la Música hosted the ceremony for the new certifications this Thursday, bringing the total number of accredited entities in the Barcelona destination to 1,141. The project, endorsed by the Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR), aims to advance the sustainability of tourism and the sector in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The certification highlights the effort and work of businesses to promote responsible tourism that respects its environment.

In addition to the Biosphere certification, the CCIB holds ISO 20121 for Sustainable Event Management and was the first convention center in Europe to obtain ISO 22000:2018 for Food Safety. Since 2011, it has been reporting on Corporate Social Responsibility actions through its annual report, following the international reference standard of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). It is also a co-founder of the Barcelona Forum District, an entity that brings together companies and entities from the Forum area to make the area socially responsible, and since 2009, it has been calculating, reducing, and offsetting its CO₂ emissions. Among other initiatives, the CCIB also offers a variety of options for organizing more sustainable events, and 98% of its suppliers are local.
