Sustainable management
Hosting events has an impact on the environment, especially as a result of transporting people and goods and the ensuing waste. To minimise this impact, the CCIB applies stringent sustainability criteria at all stages of organisation and production.

ISO 20121 Certification for Sustainable Events
We have been certified with the ISO 20121 Sustainable Event Management standard in 2018. This shows our commitment to the environment, transparency and social responsibility.
ISO 22000 Food Safety Certification
The CCIB was the first convention centre with an ISO 22000-certified kitchen in Europe. This certification, which was obtained in 2019, ensures compliance with the highest food safety standards, from purchasing of raw materials to the table.
ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification
Since 2025, we have been certified under the ISO 50001 Energy Management standard. This international standard helps optimize energy consumption and reduce the environmental impact of the center’s activities. In line with this system, the CCIB has an energy policy that integrates efficiency and sustainability criteria across all areas of operation, reaffirming its commitment to the responsible management of energy resources.
In addition, the building is equipped with a wind turbine (1 kW) and five solar panels (0.25 kW each).
Thanks to this 100% green energy consumption, in 2024 we avoided emitting 1,691.5 tons of CO₂ — the equivalent of planting more than 67,700 trees.
The CCIB also implements the following measures to improve energy efficiency:
- Maximizing natural light from the large glass façades during setup and dismantling.
- Using motion sensors in restrooms.
- Replacing traditional lighting with LED technology.
- Regulating indoor temperature in compliance with legislation: 21 °C for heating and 25 °C for air conditioning (with a margin of ±2 °C).
- Limiting the use of air conditioning and heating during setup and dismantling periods.
In 2024, CCIB’s total energy consumption was 8,842 MWh.
Since 2020, the CCIB has been offsetting its emissions through the purchase of carbon credits from the Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offset Program of the Catalan Office for Climate Change, allocated to projects run by local and regional organizations.
In 2024, these projects focus on replacing diesel boilers with biomass, recovering food to prevent waste, improving the energy efficiency of cooperative buildings, and installing photovoltaic panels.
The CCIB also collaborates with clients who wish to calculate their emissions by providing, at the end of each event, data on energy and water consumption as well as waste segregation.
These measures, together with the efforts of clients and attendees, contribute to the fight against climate change.
Below are some of the measures focusing on sustainability:
- Replacement of plastic bottles with 100% recyclable cartons and cups during coffee breaks.
- Biodegradable coffee capsules.
- Reusable bags for bag lunch services.
- Use of glass bottles for buffets, lunches and dinners.
Moreover, the CCIB’s Food & Beverage service menus are adapted to different types of diets and are made with top-quality products:
- Menus are adapted to vegan, vegetarian, halal, kosher and other diets.
- Availability of organic ingredients, including coffee.
- Local suppliers.
At the CCIB, all non-hazardous waste produced during events is checked and sorted using:
- Recycling bins throughout the building.
- Bulky waste management from the loading bay.
- Delivery of waste to authorised waste management companies.
These measures and the cooperation of everyone who works at or attends events are key to good waste management.

Furthermore:
- We sort and recycle adhesive tape after each event.
- We use sustainable carpets that consume less water and energy when manufactured.
- We offer carpet tiles, a reusable alternative that can be used in corridors and other specific areas.
The CCIB provides alternatives such as the following:
- Corrugated cardboard totems.
- Recyclable fabrics (eco fabric).
- Recyclable fabrics (eco fabric).
- PVC-free vinyl delivered without plastic.
Moreover, we use LED screens in key venue areas, such as the lobby and the Connecting Walkway and provide plasma screens as a digital alternative to traditional signage.
All information on how to get there using these means of public transportation is available in a separate section of our website.
Moreover, the CCIB makes the following available to customers, suppliers and employees:
- Four parking spaces with charging points for electric cars.
- Several charging points for electric scooters and bicycles.
- Step-free access.
- Lifts to all floors.
- Wide corridors and furniture positioned so as to allow wheelchair access.
- Accessible toilets.
- Ramps to get on stage, if needed
- Fire evacuation procedure specifically for people with reduced mobility, with assistance from our staff.
Among several initiatives, the staff has participated in:
- Beach and seabed clean-ups at Mar Bella and Nueva Mar Bella in Barcelona.
- Cleaning of the Besòs riverbed as part of the European Let’s Clean Up Day campaign.
- Gleaning days for World Environment Day.
- Intense pedalling (150 W) allows the station to be charged in one hour.
- Soft pedalling (30 W) does so in five hours.
When charged, the station can charge four mobile phones and two tablets. The bikes have a built-in desk so you can pedal while working.
